Correlations between Microstructures and Hydrophobicity, and Crystallization of a Fluorinated Terpolymer at Solid Interphases

Abstract :
Random THV terpolymers consisting of tetrafluoro- ethylene (TFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and vinylidene fluoride (VDF) are viable alternatives to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) combining excellent chemical stability and thermoplastic processability. Although the properties of THV may be modified by various approaches, little is known on how to tune properties such as hydrophobicity and crystallinity of THV at solid interphases. In the current study, first we study the microstructures of THV by 19F NMR in solid state, in the melt at high temperatures and in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) at high pressure. Upon figuring out the possible microstructures such as TFE-TFE-TFE, VDF-HFP, and TFE-HFP-TFE sequence orders, we focus on tuning hydrophobicity of THV in thin films by correlating the hydrophobicity to lower surface energy groups of THV. Then, we investigated the crystallization of THV by confining into ordered nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). It was recognized that HFP units reduces the crystallinity of THV, and mainly crystallinity due to TFE units are there even in nanopores. However, both melting temperature and melting enthalpy of THV in AAO were deviated from bulk behavior.
